The CARbon Interface OCean Atmosphere buoys were designed and developed by SERPE-IESM (Société d'Etudes et de Réalisation de Protection Electronique - Informatique Electronique Sécurité Maritime) under a EUREKA contract. Three research and technical groups have been involved:

Dr. Liliane Merlivat of LODYC in Paris is the chief scientist responsible for this program.

The buoys make hourly measurements of:

fCO2 Sea Surface Temperature and Salinity
Fluorescence Wind Speed
Air Pressure Air Temperature

Data is retrieved in 'real time' using the Argos System.

A new version of the buoy, the CARBON buoy, includes measurements of pH and salinity.
